ABOUT MONICA

Monica, an enrolled member of the Gabrielino/Tongva Nation, Acjachemen, and Chicana, finds deep inspiration in her cultural heritage, weaving the stories and traditions passed down through generations into her artwork. Specializing in illustration, painting, sculpture, creative writing, and digital art, her talent knows no bounds. She passionately collaborates with various Native communities, documenting their issues, traditions, and ceremonial practices, and shining a spotlight on their cultural heritage.

Her current series centers on the display of hands, each telling its own story. This choice invites viewers to see themselves in these artworks, as the hands depicted belong to real people with real narratives. While it is crucial to address the past traumas and ongoing challenges faced by Native peoples, Monica aims to celebrate the positive contributions within the community. Through her work, she emphasizes that we can sing our songs, practice our traditions, and embrace our culture today, honoring the resilience of our ancestors who paved the way for us to thrive.

This year, I had the profound honor and opportunity to create the artwork for the annual California Native American Day poster. The theme for this year is: Walking in Their Footsteps: Carrying Forward the Legacy of Strength and Sovereignty.

Inspired by this powerful message—and with the support of community members—I created a visual representation that honors the diverse Nations across California. The artwork features people from the southern lands of the Kumeyaay to the northern territories of the Hoopa, with depictions of culture and tradition from the many regions in between.
